Bone disorders
Metabolic bone disorders are mostly uncommon except one – osteoporosis. This is the name given to the thinning of normal bone with age that may result in fracture (typically the wrist, spinal vertebrae and the hip).
There are a number of risk factors that predispose people to this condition such as a family history, a previous fracture, low BMI and those taking prednisolone. Other bone disorders include Pagets disease, osteomalacia (vitamin D deficiency) and bone marrow edema syndromes. The diagnosis is usually made with a bone density scan (DEXA scan) - a simple, quick and painless investigation.
